Mouth Yeast

Infection – Oral

Thrush

The curse of oral thrush! When one thinks of mouth yeast infection, the word “Yuck!” comes to mind. But, really we all have yeast in our mouths, gastrointestinal tracts, and throughout our body. It’s natural. And, when our bodies are working well, and our chemical balance is all in order – it’s a good thing.

Candida Albicans is the scientific name for a fungus that lives in our bodies. When all is well, it works with the “good” bacteria in our body to battle “bad” bacteria such as group B. strep and E. Coli. When our chemical balance is out of whack, however, an overgrowth of Candida occurs, resulting in Candidiasa – a yeast infection.

Mouth Yeast Infection Is Most Common In Those With A Weakened Immune System

Oral Thrush – mouth yeast infection – is recognized by the white curd-like patches on the insides of the mouth, tongue, and back of the throat. It’s also sometimes referred to as a yeast infection of the esophagus.

Most healthy women have small amounts of yeast in their vaginas. Newborns, whose immune systems are not yet fully developed, make contact with the yeast while making their way through the mother’s birth canal.

This may result in the baby getting a yeast infection of the mouth. Should the baby get Oral Thrush, or mouth yeast infection, it can be easily treated with the anti-fungal antibiotic known as Nystatin.

Candidiasa commonly occurs in the mouths of toddlers as a result of having received antibiotics to treat a viral infection. Antibiotics kill the “good” bacteria that keep yeast in check. So, while the viral infection is getting under control, a yeast infection may be brewing.

Mothers should be proactive in their fight against Candidiasa by ensuring that their toddlers eat a diet healthy in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Probiotics – “good” bacteria found in live yogurt cultures and yogurt-based beverages – offer some additional protection in fighting yeast infections.

People whose immune systems have been compromised by disease – or the medication treating the disease – are at particular risk for a systemic yeast infection. A systemic yeast infection can occur when the yeast from the Oral Thrush, mouth yeast infection, breaks into the blood stream and affects the organs.
